Golden-hour family portraits at Samford.

Why the last forty-five minutes of daylight at Samford Valley are quietly the best of the day — and how I plan a family session around them.

Samford Valley sits about twenty minutes west of the Cashmere studio, on the other side of the D'Aguilar Range. It's one of my favourite places to photograph a family.

The valley faces roughly east, which means once the sun drops behind the range in the late afternoon, the whole landscape spends about forty-five minutes bathed in soft, indirect light. No squinting and no harsh shadows on faces. Nobody chasing the kids back into shade. Just everyone lit evenly and generously, the way bridal magazines pretend natural light always looks. For a family portrait, it's almost cheating.

When to shoot.

Golden hour shifts through the year. In Brisbane's autumn (April to early June), the sweet spot at Samford runs roughly from 4:15 to 5:00 pm. In spring (September to November) it's closer to 5:30 to 6:30. Summer pushes later still — 6:30 to 7:30 — which is sometimes too close to small-children bedtime, so we usually save outdoor family sessions for the cooler months.

I check the forecast the morning of the session and again two hours before. If a thunderstorm rolls in, we'll either reschedule or move to my Cashmere studio — there's always a plan B.

Where exactly at Samford.

The two locations I return to most often are the long-grass paddocks just off Mount Samson Road and the open clearings inside John Scott Park. Both give you plenty of room to wander, with natural backdrops that feel uncluttered but never barren. I avoid main paths and busier picnic areas — quiet matters as much as the light.

If your family has a meaningful spot of your own — a back paddock, a favourite walking trail, a friend's farm — I'm always happy to shoot there instead. Familiar places make for relaxed children.

How children actually behave.

The honest truth is that small children don't perform on cue. The most reliable way to get a good portrait of a four-year-old is to give them something genuine to do — pick wildflowers, race their sister to a tree, sit on dad's shoulders, ask grandma a silly question. I work in short bursts and always at the kids' eye level, and I never bribe. If anyone is having a moment, we pause for snacks and come back to it in five.

Posed shots come first while everyone is still fresh — the formal "all five of us looking at the camera" frames you'll want for the wall. After that, we let the session breathe. Some of my favourite frames are the in-between ones: a hand on a shoulder, a shared joke, a parent watching a child run.

What to wear.

For Samford in the warmer light, I lean towards earthy tones — sage, oat, terracotta, soft denim, cream. They sit beautifully against the dry grass and eucalyptus greens of the valley. Group everyone in the same palette without matching exactly: think shades of the same colour, not five identical white shirts. Avoid bright whites (they reflect strongly), busy patterns and large logos. Bare feet are lovely if the kids are happy with it; otherwise plain sneakers or sandals.

Logistics, briefly.

A family session at Samford is around an hour on the ground, plus travel. I'd suggest arriving fifteen minutes before the golden window opens so we can do a short walk through the location, settle the kids, and start shooting the moment the light turns. Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, a brush and a change of clothes for any small humans involved.
